It's nearly over...
Hi Everyone,
Well, the series is slowly but surely coming towards the end of its run. It's been a rollercoaster of a ride for the last 7 weeks. It started with as much hype as any show has ever received, which added enormous pressure to deliver.
As a team we felt that over 8 eps Ashes to Ashes was a great piece of work. We had all worked our socks off, for nearly 6 months. We were lucky we had some of the best people in the business as part of the team. All the way from the execs right through to the runners, they were quality people. We also knew that there would be some sort of backlash from certain quarters who were still mourning Life on Mars. We thought it would be a minority and thankfully it was. The difficult thing for a lot of people is when, for instance, 99 people tell you you're great, and 1 person tells you you're rubbish, its the 1 person's opinion that tends to stick with you.
After the first episode it felt like world war 3 had broken out, and all of us in some way or another felt hurt by some of the statements that were banded around. It's very difficult to sit on the sidelines and keep quiet when all you want to do is get Raymondo out of the cupboard and go round and stamp on one or two people's toys (if you know what I mean). Some of the things said after just one episode were frankly stupid and narrow minded. How can anyone judge a SERIES on just 1 episode??? As I said, it's very difficult to sit on the sidelines when one of your friends is getting some undue criticism. Keeley is not only one of the finest actors I've had the pleasure of working with, she is also one of the nicest people. She, like everyone else, was very upset by what was being said. I sat at home having seen her work over 6 months astonished at some of the rubbish being said, by people who never really wanted to give the show a chance. People who had made the decision before they had seen 1 frame that they were not going to enjoy the show. For me Keeley has done the most difficult of jobs by not only filling John Simm's shoes, but also showing the whole of the country what a great actress she is!!

The one thing we were all grateful for was the millions upon millions of fans who went into Ashes with a clear open mind and were willing to give the show a chance on its own merits. To all of you, we thank you very much, and hope that your willingness to give it a chance has been rewarded with some great storylines, great performances and all brilliantly put together by producers and directors, along with a fantastic crew.
I must admit, as most of you know, I like to keep my eye on what people are saying on the forums. Nothing has given me more pleasure than seeing the people who at the beginning were saying some very negative things about the show, turning tail and starting to say some very positive things instead. Well done to them for having the guts to admit they were a little hasty. I also know there are still some people out there who don't like the new show. Which is fine. They watched.....They wanted to like, but they just didn't enjoy it. Television is very subjective. One man's wine etc etc. You can't please all of the people all of the time. Life on Mars was a breakthrough piece of tv, of which we are all very proud to have been a part of. Ashes to Ashes is a completely different entity, and in that fact is not going to suit everyone.
We hope that over the last 7 episodes you have all got a feel for the new characters, and enjoyed the new style and storylines. We have seen some amazing performances along the way. We (as in the mars boys who are still here) were very very lucky to not only get Keeley as our leading lady, who, by the way, has surpassed anything we could have hoped for (before we knew who was being cast), but we managed to get some fantastic actors to be part of our team. They all added so much to the work, and again proved that Kudos are one of the best at casting a drama programme (well they cast me, didn't they haha).
It's time for me to finish this blog, but before I do I'd just like to say thank you to all our fans who have stuck with the show, given it the time it needed to grow, and are now firm supporters. We knew it would be a "big ask" to expect you to just forget about Mars and embrace Ashes, but you have managed to take Ashes to another part of your hearts and for that we are ever grateful. We will endeavour to produce something of the same high quality if we do another series, and I'm sure with the same team behind us, we can. Please enjoy episode 8, it's a truly brilliant piece of TV, with a lovely twist at the end. We get to see the ever amazing Geoffrey Palmer, and some of the finest acting from certain quarters you will see for a long time (Oh, and we get to hear Raymondo sing.....now that is not to be missed). Please enjoy, and again many thanks for your continued support, we really appreciate it.

Dean, I think you're ace, I really do.
And Ray has even been my favourite character of A2A, which, considering he was my most hated of LoM, is a testament to your consistently excellent acting.
Thank you for the bottom of my heart for the entertainment - this show has been a joy over the past weeks and had me roaring with laughter one minute and close to tears the next, loving all of your work!
Any criticism that isn't constructive should be well and truly ignored.
Much love,
A Fan.
Fantastic blog again. I'm so glad I discovered it. There isn't much more I can add to what I said last time, apart from the fact that I still love it, I can't wait for episode 8, and I can't wait to hear you sing, hehe!
nonsenseandmischief
Thanks for this very candid blog Dean.
I agree wholeheartedly with everything you have said. Of coure the one negative comment hurts far more than the 99 in praise, but that statistical balance is overwhelmingly positive. And that's what counts in the end.
It was a brave decision to go with Ashes in the first place, but it turned out to be the right one. And I reckon series 2 will surpass this, and then some.
Thanks for your Ashes blogs over the last few months Dean, it's been a pleasure to read them. And I looking forward to seeing what you have planned for us next.
Love J xx
Next Thursday I'm gonna do something I've never done before: cancel a date with friends for the sole reason that the season finale of Ashes to Ashes will be on! I enjoyed every minute of A2A and the past few weeks just went too fast.
From the wet and cold Netherlands I'd like to thank you all for the weekly hours of tv magic. :)
Hi Dean
*waves merrily*
I just wanted to say thanks for A2A.
I went into this series as a die hard LoM lover who couldn't imagine how A2A could compare to the magic that was created in A2A but I have to say that I've never been so glad to be proved wrong.
Congrats to all of you guys for producing such a fantastic piece of work. I'm dying to see episode 8 but, conversely, am dreading it because it will mean the end of the series.
How will we all survive until Series 2?
Anyway, thanks again for your work in A2A, I love Ray and Chris and can't wait to see how they develop in Series 2.
Hugs
Ali
Congratulations on the show's success. I have loved every minute and can't believe that it'll be all over this time next week! You have all done a wonderful job.
Thank you,
Linz

Thank you for your blog, Dean.
I must say I went into A2A at first just out of curiosity, but boy did it suck me in fast. I'm addicted, and not just because of the plot (which has me tearing my hair out and speculating like I've never done before), but because I've enjoyed watching you guys tremendously and because you made me love the characters to bits.
So thank you for those gripping past few weeks, and cheers from a French fan :)
Thanks for such a great blog entry. I agree with you when you say you cannot judge a TV show on one episode. I don't think the people who write these reviews give any thought to the actors, or indeed the crew behind the scenes, who have put in so much hard work to make the programme what it is.
I loved LOM and I've grown to love A2A. I can't understand why the minority is complaining about A2A being a spin-off. I don't even consider it in those terms. A2A is a different show and deserves to be judged on its own merit. There may be three of the same characters in the show as in LOM, but this series has given us a chance to see those characters develop and we have learnt more about them on a personal level. I think that deserves to be applauded.
I can't believe it's nearly over already! I just want to take this opportunity to thank you, the other actors, and the crew for doing such a fantastic job on A2A. The series has gone from strength to strength over the eight episodes and I am certain will continue to improve over the next series! *keeps fingers crossed*
Thanks again,
Ange

Dean,
Thanks so much for sharing this. I've had the opportunity to watch not only Life on Mars, but Ashes as well - and they are two of the finest shows I've ever seen on television to date. To be honest, I wasn't entirely sure how Ashes would measure up compared to Life on Mars, but I've been pleasantly surprised by it. The entire cast (Phil, Marshall, Keeley, yourself and the rest) have given nothing but top-notch performances over the past several weeks, and I almost hate to see this series come to an end. I would love to see a second series of Ashes, if there's one in the works.
Roger
Dean, as always I enjoyed reading this blog and I think it's so refreshing to have an actor who is willing to put a bit of himself out there. I can't imagine how it feels to have your friends slagged off and it's probably one of the many reasons that I'm not an actor (other than not being able to act obviously). Personally I don't like the character of Alex but would never say anything derogatory about Keeley.
I must admit that Ray is actually my favourite character and you have done a wonderful job with him. His flirting with Simon Neary will stay with me for a long time!
Can't wait to hear the singing. I love a man that can sing and I know you can.
Thanks again honey and I hope series two (please say there'll be one) will be as wonderful as this one.
Take care
Sarah xx
Hi Dean,
Loved reading this entry, and totally agree with your opinions. I too was glad to see that people who didn't like A2A to begin with have started to enjoy it!
I for one am thoroughly enjoying the series (and can't wait to hear Raymondo sing in Episode Eight!) Thanks so much to you, and all the other cast and crew who've been involved, for a wonderful eight-week ride!
Yayster
I've liked parts of each episode, but I just haven't been able to get into A2A even though I really wanted to love it. I'm sticking with it to the end, though, because I do love seeing you guys and your characters onscreen again. And I'm hoping there's some kind of interesting twist to the story underneath it all.
Trish
I loved LOM and I love A2A. I watched the first episode with an open mind and certainly wasn't disappointed. Ignore the critics, you're all brilliant.
*is looking forward to the singing, and hopefully a second series*
Dean,
Well said that man. I personally think Ashes to Ashes has been amazing. Equally as good as Life on Mars, just in a different way.
The entire cast is just fantastic. You know you're watching quality actors in quality programming when you just want to climb into the tv and join in, kicking in the nonces and firing up the Quattro. Anyone who can't enjoy that should switch over and watch some property programmes or whatever other rubbish is on at the same time. Such undue criticism isn't worth reading. I hope Keeley (and the rest of the cast and crew)knows that.
My only criticism is that it has to end next week. It's kept me sane during my last term at university and it has gone far too quickly, yet I can't wait to find out what happens. I just know that, as with Life on Mars, two series will be nowhere near enough.
Loving your work Raymondo, best wishes,
Kate from York, where it's parky out ;)
I have to admit that ok maybe A2A is not as good as Life On Mars, but it's a great show. I'm really enjoying it, and I can't wait to see the finale.
As for Alex, I love her. She's one of my favourite female tv characters, she's strong and I love the way the character acts.
PS: Still waiting to hear something about Life On Mars remake in Spain. I'm scared.
We loved the programme from the word go and were completely surprised by the negative press.
Each to their own, but it does seem that some would prefer Alex to droop around being pathetic. It’s been great to see a woman angry and fighting, (try taking my daughter away and see how aggressive I get).
You’ve given us the first programme that I and my husband will drop everything to watch in a long long time. Huge thanks to the lot of you.
Oh and the passive smoking/jiggling about bit, priceless. :D
I've only just come across your blog, Dean, and thank you so much for writing it!
I agree with what you say about the negative minority, especially those idiots who were so unjust and unfair about Keeley. That made me so angry as Keeley did a fantastic job.
Thank you, and everyone else involved, for such a wonderful series. You were all just amazing! I am very much looking forward to the second series in 2009!
Heidi
Dean, I could hug you.
I could not have put this into better words myself.
I honestly do not know whose those critics are that have blasted keeley, But I think they have watched a totally different show to the one that I have watched. She's Amazing.
I actually think Ashes is better than LOM. but thats just my opinion, which does not in anyway mean I did not like LOM. Just means I like this better.
I really feel for these characters, They to me are more likeable & identifiable. Also the writing, casting and acting is superb.
Thank you for a rollercoaster ride over the last few weeks, packed with theories, twists, witty one liners and amazing chemistry ( not to mention the awesome 80's perm...we all had them. lol).
I look forward to Series two and wish you all well.
And to keeley. Ignore These idiots. we love you :)
xx Jo
Dean, I have loved this show from the first episode. It's bold, funny and exciting. I did love LoM but I have to confess to being a total Ashes addict too.
Please make more or we will, in fact, come round your house and stamp on your toys.
xx
A big thank you for this blog and a great first season of A2A. I am very much looking forward to the end of season 1 and can't wait for the second series. I read the strange comments some reviewers had for Keeley and I so disagree. I think she did a fantastic job. As BBC iplayer does not work on the continent, I will even buy the DVDs and send to my brother in Germany(he's a huge LOM fan and I have updated him on A2A from episode one). Best wishes, Birgit
It's silly Scully again, but what I have to say is quite serious. You guys went in to this series with both eyes open and a positive attitude about the outcome, as you knew that what you were making was excellent television. I know it must have hurt to read many of those comments, as it incensed me to no end (read my comments in Ian Wylie's blog for the full effect). Of course you knew that not everyone was going to like it, but like you said, some of those comments were downright disrespectful. However, for those of us who love your blogs, who love keeping up with your goings-on, and above all, who love Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes both (and believe me, Janet was right, we are the majority here), this piece of television far surpassed any of our expectations. The BBC will be foolish not to continue this story arc. Dare I say that I have become even more wrapped up in speculation and analysis in Ashes than I even was during LoM.
Please keep us in your thoughts when you see things that get you down....that goes for the rest of the cast as well (esp. dear Keeley). However, I for one would still have loved for you to have brought Raymundo out for a little stamping-on-toys action. ;)
Lots of love from Kansas,
Jen Z.
Personally, who cares what the critics think; we love the show and that's all that matters. I know it's difficult to think that, but whatever. The show is honestly the best thing on TV at the moment and the fact that Thursday nights a load of us have such a indepth conversations about it just proves that you guys are definitely doing something right! The criticism to do with Keeley in particular annoys me because if LoM hadn't come first, and they treated the series as seperate, and forgot about Sam, none of that stuff would be being said. She's a wonderful actress and you're a wonderful actor. You should all be so proud of the show.
Sorry, that was very rambly and mostly consisted of rubbish but I know what I mean!
xxx
Deano,
What can I say that hasn't already been said ?
Ashes To Ashes has been a total thrill ride, from watching Ray, Chris and Gene give London a run for its money to following Aex's journey.
Thank you for all your hard work, roll on Series Two !
*HUGS*

Hi Deano
Great Blog, I want to say thanks to you and the rest of the cast for an amazing series. Thanks for sending me around the twist with all the ups and downs and theorys my mind has gone through. Im dreading it after thursday with not having anymore to watch.
I really hope that there is a 2nd series you all deserve one.
Take care
Tasha
I have waited so long to hear you sing again, Deano! How can I make this week go more quickly?
I've not read all of your journal but the sentiments you expressed in this entry were so pure and honest.
I really haven't picked up any of the bad press about Keeley and I'm certainly not going to seek it out now. She took on a monumental task and developed the role into something that drops regularly dropped my jaw. It's so naff and almost patronising to say she has been brave but she has made such a wonderful multi dimensional character with Alex.
I know the premises of both shows are linked but I have not attempted to compare them at any point because I see them as two such wonderful fresh pieces. We are just very lucky that some of our favourite geezers from LoM have popped up in A2A.
Please come back to us when you start prepping for Series 2.
Dean,
I liked LOM but I actually love A2A. My family watches it (legally) in the U.S. every Thursday night. We haven't done that since the X-Files aired many moons ago.
The mystery in A2A feels more raw and real, perhaps because I'm female. The show brings the fun and the silly and ridiculously over the top (the boat on the Thames was a bit much.)
I would like to commend Keeley Hawes for taking hold of this character and committing to the fact that Alex isn't always likeable. I fear there are "critics" and I use that term loosely, that cannot differentiate role from actor. Pity. The whole interpretation is so subjective as to render anyone else's criticism moot.
Our decision? We have had some minor quibbles but we love the show and scream at the television and swap theories. I haven't done that with a tv show in a looooong time.
Thank You!
Dean, you are so lovely to post updates and defend your colleagues, as you do. Your defense of Keeley Hawes does you proud!
I have to say that I like Ashes to Ashes more than LOM, partly because your part is so much bigger and funnier.
I can't wait to hear you sing next week.
cubbie
Dean, congratulations for helping make A2A such a huge success!
I have enjoyed every episode of both LOM and A2A. Both series were marvelously entertaining.
You and the rest of the cast should be very proud of this accomplishment!
Thank you for a fantastic and insightful blog entry, Dean. It's a pleasure to read such an honest and heartfelt piece.
I hope series 2 of A2A brings more great things - I'm sure it will.
Thank you again - you're a star.

Just wanted to say how much I have always enjoyed reading this blog. Thank you for posting it for us to read.
Watching A2A has been a completely different experience from watching LOM and one of the main things I have enjoyed is your portrayal of Ray. So thank you again.
Victoria
Hey Dean,
Wanted to pop in and say I am LOVING Ashes to Ashes! You all put in amazing and highly memorable performances. I am so sad it is coming to an end next week! I shall really miss it! I hope there is a season 2 coming. :) I shall really miss all the unique humour and fun on Thursday evenings. You, Philip, Keeley and Marshall rock!
Sorry, forgot to mention Montserrat! She is fab too!
Hello, just wanted you to know that I LOVE the show! - best thing on TV. And I thought Keeley was amazing as Alex.
Hi Deano
I just wanted to say that, although I disliked the first episode (it doesnt fit in with the rest of the eps now, I realise) and I will admit that gladly, I watched more and totally love it. It's still the best thing on tv.
I love the perm and tache combo - shades of Bert Reynolds, methinks, except you are better looking by far!
I'll be sad when this series comes to an end, but I'd love to see a second series come along to brighten my day :D
Love, Zoex
I have truly loved watching Ashes to Ashes and think that the whole cast have been brilliant. The critics of Keeley don't know what they're talking about, the fans such as myself think she rocks!
Thanks for taking the time to write to us, we appreciate your work on and off screen! I hope you guys get a second series :- )
I am so happy to read this post that I can't stand it.
When I first watched Life on Mars, I because completely hooked. Not only only was I hooked on the show, but I fell in love with its cast. The performances were some of the most convincing and compelling I'd ever seen.
When I heard that Ashes to Ashes was coming, I wasn't skeptical, I was excited. I was not sure how everything would gel, but from episode 1, I have been bouncing off the walls. Keeley Hawes and Monserrat Lombard are unspeakably wonderful to watch! It's a joy to see the characters grow.
Of course the "negative Nancys" are easier to hear, but they are simply full of it. Particularly when it comes to Keeley! Thank God I can rent Spooks (MI-5 where I am) to hold me over until the next series.
Thank you all for doing such a consistently marvelous job!
Wonderful show, wonderful actors. Best thing I've seen on TV, without a doubt! It's completely different to LOM and I don't know why people still keep making negative comparrisons. Keeley is fabulous and very beautiful. I simply can not wait for another series!
Good work DCI Deano ;-) x x x
Love reading your blog Dean!
Can't believe A2A is finishing this week. I honestly can't remember the last time I made sure I kept a particular night free without fail in order to watch a tv show! - but that's what I've done for the last 8 weeks.
Top quality tv - wipes the floor with anything else on these days, quite frankly. Outstanding performnces by all the actors involved. I've yet to meet anyone in my day-to-day life, over the last couple of months, who DOESN'T think this programme is legendary.
I know it's easy for us to say 'ignore the negative comments' but I'll leave you with this thought - the reality is for every fifty people you can find who don't like A2A there are a million out there who do!
SEE YOU IN SERIES 2......WOOHOOOO!!
lots of love
Natasha xxxx
Thank you Deano and to all the other cast members for such a great show. I loved Life On Mars and couldn't wait to watch Ashes to Ashes...tbh...it's am awesome show, can't wait for ep 8...nailbiting here waiting.
I think you're all so well cast, you're just as nice in person as you are as Raymondo...You don't really act when you're playing him are you!?!?!?!?
All my love to all of you. Can't wait to hear Philip*swoom* and you sing
:D x

Hi Dean,
Thanks for such a fantastic blog. It's lovely to read all your thoughts and that you appreciate the good wishes that we have all sent you. A2A has turned out to be a brilliant show. Some of the personal criticism was indeed un called for. LOM was such a bolt from the bluesome people could not imagine the success being repeated, they only needed to give A2A time. All of the cast have been excellent. I am so sad that it is coming to an end. I'm just hoping and keeping my fingers crossed for series 2.

Dean
Fantastic blog, all of which i can relate to.
As with everyone elses comments thanks for a great series and roll on Ep 8!
Oh if i ever get chance to meet you again you will have to do the "He goes Boom.. he goes boom" routine .. obviously with the actions :) ... now that is one of the funniest pieces of TV comedy I have ever seen !
All the very best Deano !
Mike
Hi Dean. I'd never seen LoM when Ashes started, so it took a bit of explaining, but I loved it from minute one of episode 1. You should all be so proud - what an amazing series! It's obvious that the core cast had a great time making it - you gel so well. I can't wait for series 2!
(By the way, I've now watched all of LoM as well. It's fantastic, but I love Ashes even more - it's stolen a little piece of my heart.)
Thanks for giving us all such a wonderful eight hours of television - here's to the next eight!
Alexandra Slater.
Dean - I've been wanting to post to this blog for ages; but I must admit you had me completely starstruck!
I have to post now to back up how bloody good Ashes has been for me - Life on Mars was the reason I want to go into TV; Ashes has made me DETERMINED to do it. I moved country to follow that dream. It's simply fantastic.
I'm a bit of a geek when it comes to BBC productions; and I honestly think Ashes tops everything.
I, like many others, was REELING at the stuff Keeley was getting hit with. I would defend her and Alex to the ends of the earth - she's a role model, fun, witty (and obviously a beautiful woman, but that goes without saying!) and a very, very talented woman.
I honestly think Ashes is better than Mars. No, I'm not joking. It's the difficult second album, but you Mars chaps have grown with the characters (as they have with you) and the writing is better than it has ever been.
I'm probs blocking up your blog with my rambling, so I'll stop it there.
I can't physically wait until episode eight; but with the impending wait until series 2 it'll be like losing a friend until it airs again...
Need a personal runner for the second series, Dean? :P
Hi Dean,
I've only just stumbled across your blog, and just wanted to say that my boyfriend and I have LOVED every minute of Ashes. Not just because of the nostalgia it inevitably stirs (we are 32 and 38) but because the story, the acting and the whole feel of it has been so engaging.
I have always been a fan of Keeley Hawes, and I absolutely adore her in this- Alex is a fantastic character and I think Keeley has done herself proud, creating what has to be a classic female character. How great as a woman to have female characters on screen that are multi-dimensional, and not just simpering foils to the male lead! I think certain people, as you say, were determined not to like the series for their own silly reasons.
Of course all the ladies love phil/gene! No need to expand on that, but I must say one of the greatest revelations of this series has been your good self!! I feel that this series has really expanded on the characters in mars, and done it with great success! You have been consistently fantastic throughout, and so have 'chris' and 'shaz'. the episode in which shaz is stabbed had me on the edge of my seat wringing my hands, and my boyfriend in tears!!
I just hope you get to make another series, and three would be great, if teh story could sustain it. Its been fantastic to have a well scripted, proper TV show on again, its right up there with Spooks, Hustle, and all the other really innovative progs that are slowly beating back the tidal wave of reality dross thats on screen these days. Ashes is truly one of my favourite ever TV progs, and I'm not won over easily :)
keep up the good work! We will be getting in the red wine, and watching with baited breath this Thursday! xxx
Great blog Dean - completely agree.
Criticism is fine if it is fair but I really really don't understand where these critics are coming from - absolutely love the show, even better than LOM and think the acting from ALL is fantastic.
Unfortunately there are a few people who just like to be negative for the sake of it.
Can't believe we have to wait a whole year for the next series!
x
Dean,
I guess it must be so hard to read negative comments about something you have worked so very hard on. But ultimately these are just a small selection of people who just happen to have big voices. The viewing figures tell a much different story, I am sure, and you should take from this that there is a consitently high number of people who really love the show!
But I suppose that's easy for us to say - though I hope you get some cheer from it!
On a personal note, I've loved this series, and I try so hard not to miss it. I have an exam for my Masters degree this Thursday, and I suspect I'll be pretty stressed at the end of it. Episode 8 sounds pretty special, so I am really looking forward to it, and I'm sure it will lighten my mood considerably!
Thanks to you all for the laughs! We've all had a brilliant time watching you!
xx
Hi Dean,
Just wanted to say how much I have enjoyed the series and how much I was frustrated with that minority who judged the series based on the first episode. I think the differences between the two series has been the most exciting part, if A2A had been a carbon copy of LoM then it wouldn't have pleased that minority either.
The acting has been fantastic from everyong and I can't wait for the final episode, and to see you all again in series 2!
Thanks for a wonderful 8 weeks x
Top man Dean. Hope there's a second series. Has become better and better with each passing week (as LOM did funnily enough!)
Thank you so much for such a lovely read. The show has been fantastic - I've even bought both LoM box sets to get me up to speed again for Ashes.
A truely wonderful piece of work and thank you to yourself and all the cast, especially Keeley, for making such a fantastic and unforgettable series.
Takes me back to 1981 - been playing the soundtrack CD in my office and my secretary is feeling a bit old before her time LOL.
Thank you so much once again.
Axx
Mr Andrews, thank you for another series and for your great performance. Very excited about the eighth episode, more so than before.
Hi Deano,
What everyone else said and I hope to see season 2 roll round soon.
Another excellent Behind The Scenes entry.
Amazing work from all cast members ,especially Keels cos it could have been impossible for her.
Hope the negative comments didn't get too many people down too much.
Again, brilliant work.
You have filled my Thursday's now and took my life away with Ashes To Ashes. For something that originally was watched because I wanted to fill the time between programs (I thought I'd confess now) it completely hooked me and left me totally and utterly obsessed.
I did catch a few of LOM but this hooked me in so much easier because I love the eighties and all of the things attached to it. I remember eight weeks ago, although it certainly doesn't feel it, watching the last half an hour of Ashes To Ashes and thinking, 'This is completely brilliant.'
I've defended this program, Keeley, you and everyone else to the ends of the earth on Youtube and in my day to day life but it is a small group of imbeciles who keep critising something that isn't there. Keeley is a fantastic leading lady with talent, looks, charm and charisma and you are an absolute comic genius. B**tard Breville! I can't believe this is ending so soon and I am so upset! Good look with the future and you know that this is by far the most successful show at this moment and stupid ignorant people complain for a work-of art.
Lots of love,
Lucy, xxxx
Hello Dean :)
Must say I can't believe that there's been negative comments on Ashes, I find that so weird, now I must say I only recently watched life on mars, but I feel Ashes is just as special and amazing in it's own way, I've been waiting since last thursday for today to come, I can't wait to see how it ends, although then I'll be sad cos I won't have it to watch anymore :(
I think everyones done an amazing job on the show and I only hope the best for all of you :)
Hi Dean!
Just have to say how utterly superb the last episode was, am still completely blown away (pardon the pun!) by it all!
Some fantastic lines by Ray, definately a brilliantly understated character.
Well done to you, Phil G, Keeley, Marshall and Monserrat, looking forward to series 2!!
Gem x
I recall Life On Mars picking up quite a few brickbats from the, uh, more pernickety elements of the prcess, but like Ashes to Ashes, these got comfortably tonked into the stands by the huge fan base and impressive viewing figures :). Great work, looking forward to Series 2!
Eps.8 A2A. WOW. Blown away! What a show. The wife was in bits at the end - I got a bit choked myself.
Dean, I'm ex-job (and an honorary S. Yorks-man) and you've got it down pat with the old sweat mannerisms - especially the permanently attached fag between fingers and lips. Reminds me of a very well loved former colleague.
Ashes, and Life on Mars, are the best thing to have come out of the BBC for a long time. You beat Spooks and 24 hands down and I thought that'd never happen!
Well done and warmest regards to yourself and the rest of the team.
Wow. What a series finale. The wife was in bits and I had moist eyes for a moment.
Ashes, and LoM, are without doubt the best TV to have come out of the UK for a generation or more. You and the team trump even the best times of Spooks and 24 - never thought that could happen. Every major award should be kicking your doors in!
I just can't bear that is is over for this year and that I am going to have to wait until next year for the next series.. It has been absolutely fantastic from start to finish. Thank you so much for this brilliant show. I have especially loved the way Raymondo has developed.so funny and the interaction between Ray and Chris has been some of the best bits!
Roll on series 2.
I can't believe that anyone could criticise the show
Hi Dean,
Can I just add how much I have enjoyed both Mars and Ashes, I particularly like the way your character has developed and I must confess I winced in the "no seatbelt" scene, as the same thing happened to me many years ago.
I'm looking forward to the second series and I really hope you and all the regulars will be on board.
The final episode was simply magnificent, the drama was counterbalanced by the lighter moments, e.g. your singing!
Here's hoping you'll be back to update with news of Series 2,
Clare
Hi Dean,
I was cautious about spinning off "Life on Mars" and the first episode was fun but felt a bit jarring.
But from episode 2 on I was hooked more and more each week.
I didn't realise there was some kind of big controversy. I suppose when you're spinning off a massive hit and have Keeley Hawes (who I think is incredible as Alex) coming in as a central character you can't claim to be the 'underdog', and people will want to have a pop at you. It's the way of things.
I think the show's been brilliant -- from the acting to the scripts to the direction and stunts to the sets and colour co-ordination -- everything. There's no weak link I can see -- everyone's on their A-game. The finale especially was utterly stunning. Keep up the magnificent work for Series 2.
Following the end of LoM, this is probably the series I've looked forward to more than any I can remember. It was brave to try and follow LoM but the characters are too good to let them go that easily.
For me, A2A struggled to find its feet in the first couple of episodes - some of the (un PC)humour was missing and it didn't seem to be exploiting the 80's as much as LoM exploited the 70's.
However, it was still good, and thankfully as the series went on it got better and better. The episode where Ray went "undercover" in the gay club was as good as anything in LoM and the final episode surpassed it.
Congratulations on another huge success. Once again you are the best thing on TV, the characters and acting are fantastic and I can't believe I have to wait until next year for more.
Ashes was fantastic - no other show has ever made me laugh out loud, cry, shiver, think and swoon all in one episode!
There's a real feel of dedication from the writers, cast & crew and it's horrible to think that such hard work has been repaid with hurtful criticism from some areas.
As you say, there can't be anything harder than coming into a beloved show to follow up someone of John's quality but I think Keeley did a fine job and many of the aforementioned tears came from her scenes!
So I hope you all realise that it's the 99% that matters (especially when it includes people like me who have never commented on a TV program before!). I wouldn't dwell on the 1% - I doubt those critiques connect to the emotions of 5-7 million people!
So, thank you all and looking forward to more entertainment from Series 2.
P.S. Love your performance & your blog!
Anita
And so say all of us! (Couldn't have put it better myself).
Bring on 2009......
Annie
My dear Deano, and everyone who has taken the time to comment on the show...
Thank you all from the bottom of my heart.
Keeley DI Bolly Knickers "Rough as a badgers arse" Hawes x
Dear Keeley

Wonderful actress AND humour.
Again....thank you Bolly Knickers!

Dean, I'm so glad you have your own blog! Now I can communicate to you just how much I love 'Ashes to Ashes'! I hope you get to read my entry.
Your blog entry regarding those that have made OTT and somewhat cruel, unwarranted and derogatory remarks regarding 'Ashes to Ashes' rung true for me. Especially some of the ludicrous and spiteful comments regarding Keeley Hawes. I have been so frustrated by those boring people who never wanted to give 'Ashes to Ashes' a chance in the first place. But trust me, they are in the minority and are certainly not in the majority.
'Ashes' to Ashes' is a fantastic piece of Television and the only thing worth watching on the box. I've been hooked to the series since the first episode aired. I can honestly say that as much as I loved 'Life on Mars' (and I REALLY do love that show), I now prefer 'Ashes to Ashes'. It's complete genius!
What's not to like about it anyway? Fantastic cast, fantastic characters, fantastic storylines, fantastic music, Bowie-esque Clowns, etc.
P.S. 'Chris' and 'Ray/Raymundo' are my favourite characters. For me and most people I know, the series just wouldn't be the same without them. So, that's a bit of a testament to both of your's and Marshall's abilities as actors.
Anyway, I've droned on far too long so I am going to go now before I start sounding like those 'sort' of fans who probably play 'lambs' in the basement when they're let loose on day release..
.."it puts the lotion in the basket" lol.
Donna B, Basildon, Essex.
Personally, I think it beggars belief that some folk would waste 8 hours of their life watching something they were determined not to like in the first place solely for the purpose of trashing what other people have put their hearts and souls into.
Nae need t' break oot Raymondo though. Hadaway doon TRA, I'm sure The Sisters would gladly stamp on a few toys for ye hen.

Hello Dean, Hope all's well
First off congratulations to you and the gang on a cracking first series of Ashes To Ashes, I have to say I was hooked from start to finish, everyone's acting on top form every episode as usual! I liked how your character Ray has developed since Life On Mars, especially the softer side in Episode 3 with the spit the dog sock puppet but with the same one-liners that keep us in stitches time after time.
I also have to echo what you posted in your blog about Keeley Hawes. In my opinion she did the character of Alex Drake complete justice and indeed showed the country what a great actress she is, not only at playing the part but portraying it so genuinely too , thumbs up all round!
I'd like to wish you the best of luck at representing your area for Marie Curie on April 2nd and good luck to you and all the rest of the cast/crew for series 2.
-Dave
A2A has been a really entertaining series and an absolute joy to watch. Im so pleased its coming back for a second series but don't think i can wait till next year to find out what happens.I do think the criticism has been unfair...the acting has been great, story lines engaging and the fashion...well very eighties.
Good luck with the next series!
Cheers
only you could make chewing gum and smoking at the sametime look so easy and so totally cool.
Just wanted to put my two penneth in-
I think Ashes to Ashes is an awesome show (second series- yes!) with a cast of very talented actors and writers who have made the past eight weeks some of the most enjoyable and obsessed of my whole life!
The abuse that has been dished out- most particularly to Keeley, has been a complete disgrace and those who involved in it should hang their heads in shame! It does you proud that you haven't sat quietly back and let it go unanswered.
I hope at some point some of them have the grace to apologize although I doubt it- if not I've got my toy stamping boots on hand- "The sisters will sort it out"!
Ray is a great character and I must say I prefer him in this to LoM- no offence!- a lot more fun and a lot less angst!
Roll on the next season and may there be many more blogs
Much love
Thanks for coming back to do Ashes it was the best 8 weeks ever!!! I loved it me and my other half were glued for the whole hour. You, Phil,Keeley and Marshall did a fab job I a, soooooo glad that Ashes is back, I kinda knew it would be. What a fab show and I cannot wait to see what comes next year!! I was 5 in 1981 and all the memories have come flooding back thanx Deano!!!
xxxx
Dean, Marshall, Philip and Keeley,
You all rock! Appreciate the work you are doing and enjoying the story line. A little annoyed that Australia is having to remain a year behind. Missing John and Liz, but it is the "eighties" now :).
Darren.
Hi! Dean, i'm very new to this blogging, i just wanted to congratulate you, philip, keeley, marshall and monseratt, on a fantastic 8 ep of a to a, i went in watching with an open mind after seeing 'Life on Mars', and i have to say it blew me away, the writting is excellent, and i have had so many laughs, thats with thanks to the great acting of you all, also wanted to say congratulations on the award wins for philip, well thats enough rambling from me, can't wait for series 2. Love Liz xx
Thank you Dean... And I thanked Philip too, when he defended Keeley Hawes.
At the end of the day it is about jealousy and misogyny. She has broken the critics rules by being a leading actress in an iconic role and the face of No7. Keeley has always been a fine actress, who has never shied away from tough, controversial roles. She further upsets them because she doesn't sell papers.
You have to look at what the same critics do like. They critise intelligent drama and fawn over Eastenders. I have found TV lacking anything to watch since Ashes to Ashes finished..
Sorry this is late but I have been without a PC for months.
