Baftas, Ashes...and Pakistan!

Hi Everyone,

It's been a while since my last blog, and quite a lot has happened since then. Now, let me think........ I seem to remember a little known awards ceremony called "The Baftas", and "Life on Mars" was up for "Best Drama". There we all were in our Sunday best, all excited about attending the highlight of the year. Unfortunately it didn't turn out quite the way we would have liked.

We all walked round to the Palladium together (well, I say all, but we were missing John, Liz and Marshall (John was having a little trouble with babysitters, Marshall and Liz were not attending). We arrived at the red carpet to a sea of people. All of them shouting our names, and thrusting all kinds of things in front of us to sign. We had photos taken and kisses were given. After about 20mins, I managed to get to Fran and Elf, who had very kindly turned up to say hello and take some photos for the site, and "Best" magazine (well done Fran). Another 20mins and we were at the end of the carpet and in to the Palladium. We were told our category was first up. I wasn't too happy about that, cos I was of the opinion that if the decision didn't go our way, we would have to sit through the whole evening a little peed off. Anyway, some of the other members of the team thought it wasn't a bad idea, as it would get it out of the way. We lost and I was peed off for the rest of the ceremony.

After the ceremony, we were taken to the Grosvenor hotel for the dinner. It was a lovely dinner, and the company was great. We chatted about how we'd been robbed again, and about "Ashes to Ashes", and how the next series is going to shape up. We also bumped into Keeley and Matthew (who was also robbed of "best actor"). Of course Keeley looked stunning, and it was really nice to see her, as we'd not been together for a couple of months, so we had lots to chat about (of course Matthew looked as handsome as ever, but I'm not gonna say that am I? I'm a bloke ha). Then it was off upstairs for the after party. The champagne was flowing and all kinds of cocktails etc etc. I'm a little old for all that, but Denise made me stay and dance, drink and be merry (good decision). It's also nice to "people watch". The evening came to an end shortly after the 14th glass of champers, and off into the night we went. Myself and Denise were "Papped" outside which was a very new and unusual thing to happen to us, but a bit of a laugh too.

The DVD for Ashes was being released so we had some PR to do for that. I was paired up with Marshall to do a couple of things. We started on BBC Breakfast TV with Bill and the lovely Sian. They were both lovely and the interview went swimmingly. We got quite a long time on there (around 10mins) which is a lot for a DVD plugging slot. I was told by Sian after the interview that I was a "lot better looking in real life". I took that as a big compliment, so I told her she was pretty fit herself haha. Then a few days later we were on with Jonathan Ross. I was a little nervous, because of his legendary wit. I had nothing to worry about, cos he was a lovely chap, and big fan of the show, and Marshall and myself held our own against all the odds.

I'm off to Pakistan on the 10th June to make a film called "Khandahar Break". It's a feature, directed by David Whitney. I'm really looking forward to going, as my characters oppo is being played by Shaun Dooley who is not only a good mate of mine, but also a brilliant actor (and a Barnsley lad). The script is both controversial and brilliant. It's an east-west love story, that turns into lies and deceit.

I have recently had a real struggle with a "frozen shoulder", which not only had me in agony 24hrs a day, but as the name suggests it was "frozen" so I had restricted movement. Anyway, I was kindly given a feature from a national newspaper from Debbie, which talked about a new "cure" for frozen shoulders. The long and short of it was, it worked and my shoulder is back to about 95% which in my eyes is a miracle. Why am I telling you this? Oh yes, because I have managed to do some exercise in the last 3 weeks for the first time in 12 months. I wanted to be a little fitter for my trip to Pakistan (I'm sure I'll lose weight there anyway ha), so I've hit the gym and the squash courts, and managed to lose 10lbs. Hopefully after the Pakistan trip that will turn into a stone and a half, and we could have a whole new Raymondo for series 2 of Ashes. Just to stop that Gene Hunt fella getting all the Gals ha. Thanks for stopping by, and reading my blog. I will have a lot more to say soon, after my trip, which will hopefully be accompanied with some photos from the set. Thanks again for supporting us all, and I can tell you, we are all looking forward to getting back to Ashes and making another great series (I put the storyline to the producers about Alex and Ray getting it on, but they didn't seem that keen on it........can't think why haha). Will be back soon.

Deano xx

Oh! Have a great time!

Sorry about the BAFTAs. I was cursing . Loudly. But, uh, what do they know? "They don't know nowt", as Raymondo might say.

(Not that The Street isn't good, because I actually love it, but dammit, it's already had the accolades!)

You really didn't need to lose any weight, but I'm sure you're going to look well fit for A2A S2. And continue to play what has somehow become my favourite character of the show in the most awesome manner possible.

Well, bugger the BAFTAs- they know nothing and they just proved it again this year- but I do admire your restraint- there would have been more than a few swear words in my discussion of that night.

And good luck in Pakistan- I'm sure you'll be very buff by the time you get back- and the Deansters are never averse to a bit of buff! Gives us an extra reason to look forward to the next season of Ashes

Thanks for another great blog- and as the Clown says "We've been waiting for you Deano"

I was really sorry to hear that Life on Mars lost at the BAFTAs (couldn't see it myself in Norway, sadly), and I know lots of people were really confused that you didn't win.

I also want to congratulate you on being completely adorable in A2A. In LoM, Ray was the sort of character you started out loving to hate, and then he just grew on you until you realized you just plain loved him. In A2A, my love multiplied by ten the time he did the sock puppet thing, and I've wanted to hug him every time I see him since. You're doing a brilliant job portraying him, and I'm really grateful for that!

Hi Deano - thanks for posting that blog, it's always great to hear what you're getting up to! I agree about the BAFTA's - you were all robbed again, maybe they'll see the light with Ashes eh? At the end of the day, you guys won the audience award last year, and had you been put up for that this year you would have no doubt won it again - that award is far more meaningful and special, as it's voted for by the people that matter, the viewing public. Not a board of a dozen people! Viewing figures and DVD sales prove how fabulous the show is anyway. Good luck with your Pakistan trip, you really didn't need to lose weight, but well done for achieving that and I hope the shoulder's ok too. Anyway, thanks again, take care and we look forward to reading all about your trip. All the best, Sally x :o)

Pakistan? Ooh get you - that's a bit glam! Have fun.

Yep you were in good company being pee'd off by some certain award ceremony - but at least they gave you a good dinner and some free booze after. However it sounds like it was lucky for Matthew M. that you stopped after 14 glasses!

Anyway, looking forward to Ashes2 and keep up the blogs - it's nice to hear about things from your perspective.

Lovely to hear from you again! Absolutely devastated that LoM didn't win but I'm sure Ashes will get a nomination, fine show that it is. Have fun in Pakistan and I'm very excited about A2A S2 when you get back! x

Hey Dean, lovely to see you blogging again.

Best of luck for your new project in Pakistan. And don't worry about your weight... as Raymondo himself said "you don't look like Eddie Yates!".

I was annoyed along with you because my two favourite things didn't win - LoM and Top Gear - and I hadn't even heard of The Street so it can't be that good!

I'm looking forward to the photo's from Pakistan and I expect proof of this buffness ;-) oh yes!

Hope the shoulder continues to get better. Take care honey xxx

Moloko here just checking in to wish the Deanster all the best with his new project in Pakistan. Hope it goes smoothly for you.

Never mind about the BAFTAs, they've been out of touch for years anyway! Everyone knows that 'Life on Mars' was the best telly show on the box for years untill.....

...Ashes to Ashes came bursting on to the airwaves. It seriously rocks! Please put pressure on the writers to make it into three series. I'm greedy.

Well, see you later, alligator!

Oh, it's lovely to see an update here - long awaited!

Yep, the BAFTA thing was a shocker. It's a terrible disapointment when something so deserving doesn't get properly recognised. (Still, at least you had a good booze-up afterwards!)

Good luck with the Pakistan venture - most exciting.

All the best

Thanks for posting! Sorry you got all dressed up and nothing shiny to show for it at the BAFTAs. But at least you had a good time.

Good luck in Pakistan! I am sure that it is a project worth the trip. Looking forward to seeing it. Take care of yourself out there!

Hey Deano!

thanks for filling us in on what you have been up to - it's great to see you blogging again.

I agree - by all accounts, BAFTA's voting went completely crazy, and some of the most deserving nominations went unnoticed :(

Hope filming goes well in Pakistan and you have an amazing time. Looking forward to the slim, trim Ray too, but you should know we already love him (and you) as he is!

nonsenseandmischief x

ps: you and Marshall were great on both Breakfast and Jonathan Ross!

Hi Deano

I too was peed off for the rest of the BAFTA ceremony. But never mind, we all know you deserved it.

Have a great time in Pakistan. Can't wait to see the end result.

Glad the shoulder is better.

Thanks for keeping us up to date xx

Hi deano

It's great to hear what you've been up to.

As for the BAFTAs - pfffft! What do they know. We love you and that's all that really matters isn't it?

It was great to see you and Marshall on BBC breakfast on 6 May. I was devastated that we missed you at HMV for the DVD signing though. You should have come and said hello to us. We went off for a few bottles of bolly afterwards and you'd both have been more than welcome to join us - maybe next time?

Have fun in Pakistan - I hope it all goes well for you out there - don't eat too much spicy food!!!!
